About US

History

B&E Ltd is a Tasmanian financial institution with a history dating back to 1870.

In November 2001 Bass & Equitable Building Society Ltd changed its name to B&E Ltd.

Bass & Equitable Building Society Ltd was formed as a result of a merger between Bass Building Society and Equitable Building Society in November 1988.

Equitable Building Society opened its doors for business in January 1870 in Launceston. The Society had been launched after a group of public spirited citizens saw the need to provide housing finance by way of a co-operative venture.

Bass Building Society was established on the North West coast in July 1968 in Devonport. The rapid growth of the Society was enhanced by its ongoing commitment to the traditional and familiar role of financing home ownership.  By the time of its merger with Equitable, Bass was the largest building society in Tasmania.
